Nissan has announced that they will definitely have an LMP1 program in 2015. Ferrari has all but confirmed their intentions to return to prototype racing and may have a lot of money in the budget for it if F1 institutes budget caps.
With Audi, Toyota, and Porsche already competing that would put us at a minimum of 5 expected factory teams in 2015. Ford is bringing their EcoBoost Twin Turbo to the Tudor United Sports Car Series and if we're lucky maybe Ford will try their hand at Le Mans again.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mazda launched a factory LMP1 program with Toyota and Nissan already there. It won't be a big leap from the new LMP2 Skyactiv Diesel program they're going to launch this year in the US.
If Ford and Mazda head over I can tell you it isn't unreasonable to think Honda wouldn't field a team. LMP1 could theoretically have 7 or 8 factory entries in 2016. Formula what? Sports car racing is about to get really good.

Wouldn't it be something if McLaren and Red Bull took some of their extra cash from F1 and sunk it in to a prototype?

Renault too!
Like I've said, it's a new golden age.

Would love Ford to run just give Ferrari the stink-eye.

And this is why I greatly prefer Sports Car and Prototype racing, usually the endurance variety, to F1.
